Chapter 9

I knew that I was on a race against time. Harris County didn’t take domestic violence seriously enough, so I knew that it wouldn’t be long before Griff would make bail. Depending on the hour he was booked, I probably had less than 12 hours before he’d be back on the streets. So, I had to move fast, which wasn’t as simple as it sounded.

Griff’s evil ass had hidden all my keys, as well as his. So, it took me a few hours, just to locate my keys. From there, I loaded my car with as many clothes as I could grab. Knowing that I was never stepping a foot back in that house, I made peace with leaving furniture and shit. I made sure that I had all me and my baby’s important documents, before I hit up one of Griff’s safes. Nigga foolishly thought that I didn’t know the code, and I’d let him assume. Anyway, this safe in particular had over a hundred and fifty thousand in it. Not being greedy, I only took a hundred racks, knowing that there were three other safes around the house.

Of course, I could’ve cleaned him out, but I knew who I was dealing with. Me taking a portion of his money might piss him off a little, but he’d get over that. But if I took it all, then I wouldn’t be safe in the city of Houston. He wouldn’t stop, until I had a bullet in my head. So, to me, taking all the money wasn’t worth my peace.

After the way Griff had beat my ass for the past few days, I knew that I wasn’t gonna fight him on a thing. The house was his, along with everything in it. He could have it all, and I just wanted to be left alone. I honestly didn’t even wanna co-parent with him, and had already decided that he’d probably have to take me to court to see Dalani. I wanted no parts of dealing with him, period.

I ended up making several trips back and forth from the house to the storage I’d gotten near my mama’s, refusing to leave any of my clothes or bags behind. Then once I had everything I needed, I headed over to Griff’s cousin, praying that he hadn’t gotten to her first. I knew how spiteful he could be, so he wasn’t above telling his cousin to drop my daughter off, without disclosing the location to me.

“Hey, Titi, can you go get my baby?” I asked her, as I showed up at her house at one in the morning.

Titi was a light skinned heavy-set girl. She had a big heart and would usually keep most of the kids in her family. Me and her were cool, but I knew that she was the type that would always remain loyal to her cousin. So, there was always this thing where I never got too deep with her, feeling like my business wasn’t really safe with her.
